This beautifully carved South Indian Saraswati veena, which is part of a private collection, has a label from Bina, which was well known maker for its experimental instruments in the 1960s and 70s. Thus is most probably from that time. However, the rail system for the frets was common more around the beginning of the 20th century. Also the modern Saraswati veenas have a brass bridge, whereas this beauty has a bone (or horn) upper layer. Another interesting point is the use of a kalebas instead of wooden ribs, or jackwood for the resonator as is normal for this type of instrument in South India.
